Remote connection to TeddyCloud

Hey guys,

I’m currently on vacation and my son got a new tonie. Any chance to get the toniebox connected to the teddycloud?

I have several mobile phones and a windows 11 laptop available. All devices have the possibility to connect to my fritzbox via wireguard.

I tried some things but everything failed.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

This is only an idea, I’m not sure if it works.
Make sure you can access your Teddycloud.
If this is possible, then make a hotspot.
Make sure that your Toniebox connects with your hotspot. Now the Toniebox is connected to your hotspot, which has access to the Teddycloud. Have you tried to do it like this?

VPN is normally not used by tethered devices. You need iirc a rooted android for that.

It could work in this way:

  • establish ethernet connection for internet access on Win 11 Notebook
  • connect Win11 Notebook via vpn to home network (best would be to route all traffic through vpn, not only home network access)
  • make a hotspot on Win11 Notebook,
  • connect android phone to hotspot and check if the vpn connection is used as a default by checking connection to teddycloud
  • if this works, the toniebox can be connected to the hotspot and should hopefully also be able to contact the teddycloud
  • if not, maybe some static routes would need to be defined using netsh command (more complicated)

Sorry for not replying earlier.

I created a win11 hotspot after I established the vpn connection and tried to connect the toniebox but it failed. I gave up after a couple of minutes because I didnt have much more time but I will try again as soon as I’m not home again with the toniebox.

Thanks for your ideas. It seems to be acomplex topic but I’m surprised that I’m almost the only one trying to get my Toniebox connected while not being at home.

I am interested in this topic, too and pondered also about trying to use a vpn.
I tried it, simply by setting up an OpenVPN and tried reaching the teddycloud while being connected from my phone. That did not work.
I learned that, because I use a Docker with macVLan - that the host doesn’t know the ip from the teddycloud docker and thats why you cannot connect via a VPN connection to the host (same device as I use a Synology)
I found a video related to this problem and want to try the solution presented there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCPIUDpqcgw&t=997s
(tldw: short script checking if docker is up, bridgeing macvlan to host)
