It’s a V4. Now I am waiting for my Programmer and my Raspberry.
No success from Hugendubel
Hi,
sorry I am new to the topic: Why is V4 the “right” Version?
Thanks
Short answer: As it is the latest version and from my experience it’s the version which is the easiest version to get it running with teddycloud.
Long answer: From my side… I got two tonieboxes. One v4 and one v1. I am a kind of noob in that stuff, I can follow the documentation easily, but I do not have deeper understanding of this hardware stuff. But after connecting both to teddycloud I can say the following from a perspective of a end user, not developer.
Adapting the v4 was easily possible for me, I only had to buy a cheap clamp to get access to the firmware and teddycloud provides an easy webinterface to fetch and patch and write it. So all in all 2-3h for the complete setup including setting up teddycloud itself.
The v1 needs a special tag connector (expensive) or talent in soldering. I didn’t want to spend such much money for a one time use and my soldering talent… let’s not talk about that. But I was lucky and a friend of me has the soldering talent and the tools for the soldering and is a kind of geek for such tasks. Then you have to install the custom bootloader additionally. All in all it took a way more effort to get it running with teddycloud.
But I am also curious about an reply from one of the revvox team. From documentation view the custom bootloader approach currently provides more possibilities and functionality as far as i understand the documentation.
There are cheaper clamps available. You could also go this way: 0.35mm resistor wires as Tag Connect alternative - TC2050
But the v4 has the newest hardware stack and a more powerful esp32, which is easier to program for, as there is a good ecosystem around it. So it is future proof. A custom firmware is easier to implement on that box. A custom bootloader may come in the future. But in-memory patching is not possible on the ESP32. But we may implement it over teddyCloud and ship modified firmware OTA.
The CC3200 based ones were also great, especially for the custom bootloader. But not easy to program for and we won’t work on the CFW for it in the future.
Thank you for your responses; I will then try to get a V4 box and proceed from there.
I bought mine a few days ago from alternate in red. They changed the text again, it’s now “Designed by tonies, in Düsseldorf, Made in China” (so Tonies instead of Boxine and “Made” instead of “assembled”).
Mine had an MAC Addess which says “Espressif Inc” on MAC Vendor lookup, so I guess it’s an ESP.
How can you identify a v4 box from the outside without packaging?
If there is a MAC address visible, then use https://macvendors.com/. If it returns espressif (or so) than it’s the esp32 v4.
Thanks!
Probably another way to identify the ESP ones form the package outside is the model number.
I ordered various ones from Amazon and Hugendubel. Two pink and one blue. One of the pink ones is made in china and has the model number 10003 (esp32) while the other ones are model number 10001 (Hungary, cc3200). You find this information on the back of the package.
The article number stays the same. Only the last two digits differ by the color (03-0014 pink, 03-0012 blue).
I just have a green one “Summer Edition” directly from Tonies in Germany. This one is made in China with the Model Number 10001 and is cc3200.
I have a pink ESP, bought directly from tonies. The model number on the box is “10003”, the item number is “03-0014” and it is “Designed by tonies, in Düsseldorf Germany, Made in China”
I ordered a grey box from Thalia.de this week, unfortunately it’s not the ESP version. Model number “10001”
I went to a Thalia store last week and as I told them that i wanted to have the grey box, but a “special version” they where so kind to let me double check the model number “10003” before buying.
In this case “in store buying” is a huge advantage to online shopping.
Ordered a green Toniebox from Amazon for 79,95€ on Saturday because I was getting frustrated with my old CC3235. It came with an ESP Chip/Board. Made in China. Model No: 10003 Art.-Nr- 03-0013
I got my CC3235 working yesterday and dont need it anymore. If anyone in Berlin (Pankow) needs a green brand new ESP Box, message me.
If not, it gets returned.
Hi,
I bought a " Navy blue" one last week.
“Designed by tonies, in Düsseldorf, Made in China”
“Model number 10002”
It was not an ESP32 model

The navy blue ones (limited Edition) are always CC3235 boxes. But they look gorgeous, I have one as well.
Did someone order a red starter set recently directly at Tonies? 65 € are just too attractive to not try it.
The Red One has the highest Chance to get a v4 you buy not from Tonies direct, because its the most common Color.
